Franck Balthazar
Franck Balthazar is among the finest small producers in Cornas, working just 2.5 hectares in this compact Northern Rhône appellation. The son of René Balthazar, Franck took over the family estate and built a reputation for uncompromising, terroir-driven Syrah made without fining or filtration. His two primary cuvées — Chaillot and Casimir — represent distinct Cornas lieux-dits. Chaillot, from younger vines on granitic soils, is the more accessible bottling, averaging $99 per bottle at auction. Casimir, from older vines and more decomposed granite, commands higher prices and represents the apex of the domaine's quality. Both wines are made with full destemming, aged in large-format Burgundy barrels, and bottled unfined. Balthazar's tiny production and cult following among Rhône enthusiasts drive strong auction demand despite the modest appellation profile. The auction price range from $42 to $508 reflects vintage variation and cuvée differentiation. The 2015 vintage is the most traded in the auction database. Balthazar's wines offer access to serious Cornas terroir at prices well below peers like Thierry Allemand or Noël Verset, making them attractive to value-conscious collectors.

In the Glass
Balthazar's Cornas Syrahs are intense and mineral-driven, built on a foundation of dark fruit — blackberry, smoked meat, cracked pepper — underpinned by iron-rich granite minerality. Chaillot offers more aromatic freshness and violet lift; Casimir is deeper and more structured with a tarry, savory complexity. Both require time to open and reward 10–20 years of cellaring.
