About Chateau Calon Segur
Calon-Ségur, in Saint-Estèphe, is the northernmost of the Médoc's classified growths and was ranked a Third Growth in 1855. The name comes from 'calones', small boats once used to carry timber across the Gironde, and it was among the parish's earliest vineyards; Montrose's land was once part of it. Through marriage it came to the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, who also owned Lafite and Latour. He is said to have declared his heart belonged to Calon, which is why a heart appears on the label. The Capbern Gasqueton family owned it from 1894 until it was sold to the insurer Suravenir in 2012.
