About Chateau Palmer

Known as Domaine de Gascq in the 18th century, the estate was bought in 1814 by Charles Palmer, a British general and MP for Bath, who expanded it to 163 ha before debts forced its sale in 1843. The Pereire brothers, Bordeaux bankers, acquired it in 1853 and built the turreted château; it was ranked a Third Growth in 1855. In 1938 four wine-trade families bought it, and the Mähler-Besse and Sichel families remain owners. Louis Miailhe planted much more Merlot from the 1940s, and today the blend splits Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot almost equally, unusual in the Médoc. Thomas Duroux, director since 2004, moved it to biodynamics.
