About Marcassin
Marcassin is the label of winemaker Helen Turley and her husband John Wetlaufer, founded in 1990. Its name, French for a young wild boar, recalls the pig roast on the remote northern Sonoma coast that set them looking for a Pinot Noir site. In 1986 they bought 40 acres on a steep ridge about ten miles north of the Russian River's mouth, prepared the soil from 1987 and planted 14 acres of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 1991. The first estate release was the 1996 Marcassin Vineyard Chardonnay. Early wines, including bottlings from Alexander Valley and Lorenzo fruit, were made at the Martinelli winery.
