About Saxum
Saxum is the Paso Robles label of Justin Smith, built around his family's James Berry Vineyard in the Willow Creek District, on slopes of shallow clay over an ancient seabed about ten miles from the Pacific. Smith first made wine from the vineyard at Linne Calodo, which he started with Matt Trevisan in 1997. After the two parted in January 2002 he concentrated on Saxum, finishing a small winery in time for the 2003 harvest and supporting it with consulting work. The wines are Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre blends, with Bone Rock, a hilltop parcel, among the best known, and production has since grown to about 8,000 cases.
