About Sine Qua Non
Sine Qua Non is a small Ventura County winery founded by Austrian-born Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine, who started making wine in 1994 partly to supply Campanile, the Los Angeles restaurant Manfred co-founded. Early bottlings were made at Alban Vineyards; the Syrah-based 1994 Queen of Spades set the direction. Each release has carried its own name, label and bottle shape, with labels drawn by Krankl, though the practice of unique names ended in 2021. Reds rely on Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, whites on Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne. A new winery at Oak View opened in 2012, and fruit has come only from estate vineyards since 2020.
