Bernard Levet

Bernard Levet is a small, traditionally-minded Côte-Rôtie producer whose wines have attracted disproportionate attention from Rhône specialists relative to his modest production volumes and low public profile. The domaine focuses on two lieu-dits: Chavaroche (on the Côte Brune side) and Journaries (closer to Côte Blonde), both vinified with 100% Syrah and significant whole-cluster inclusion. Levet farms old vines — some exceeding 80 years — and ages in a mix of demi-muids and large foudres rather than new barriques, preserving freshness and granitic site character. Auction prices of $90 average from 270 lots with a $359 ceiling are modest for the quality level, reflecting the producer's relative obscurity compared to Guigal, Jamet, or Chapoutier. The 2017 vintage is the most traded year. Chavaroche and Journaries appear as distinct single-vineyard bottlings in the auction record, enabling direct comparison of Côte Brune versus Côte Blonde expression. Collectors specialising in traditional Côte-Rôtie consistently single out Levet as an undervalued source of old-vine, terroir-transparent Syrah with exceptional ageing potential across two or more decades — a genuine specialist discovery in an appellation where high scores and brand recognition overshadow smaller, traditionally-farmed producers. Levet's dual single-vineyard program at accessible prices makes the entry point low for the quality delivered.

Old vines averaging over 80 years in Chavaroche and Journaries — two distinct Côte-Rôtie lieu-dits on opposite sides of the appellation.
100% Syrah with significant whole-cluster fermentation; aged in demi-muids and foudres rather than new oak.
Average auction price of $90 from 270 lots — notably undervalued relative to old-vine, single-site Côte-Rôtie from better-known producers.
Price ceiling of $359 for Levet wines reflects a discovery premium for specialist collectors rather than mainstream auction demand.

In the Glass

Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie is whole-cluster Syrah in its most traditional expression — black olive, pepper, smoked meat, violets, and bacon fat. Chavaroche is darker and more structured on the Côte Brune; Journaries is more floral and silky from the Côte Blonde side. Old-vine intensity gives density without weight; acidity runs high and the wines age gracefully for 15–25 years without the glyceric richness of more modern Côte-Rôtie styles.
