Cote Rotie

Rhône Valley · France · Wine Auction Prices

Côte Rôtie — the 'Roasted Slope' — is the northern Rhône's most celebrated Syrah appellation and the source of some of France's most collectible auction wines. The steep, terraced schist slopes above Ampuis cover just 300 hectares, producing Syrah of extraordinary aromatic complexity, elegance, and longevity. Marcel Guigal's 'La La' series — La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque — define the modern auction market; single-vineyard Côte Rôtie bottled after 42 months in new oak, these wines trade at $300–800 per bottle for recent vintages and are among France's most reliable 100-point wines. Traditionally, Côte Rôtie is divided between the Côte Blonde (granite, clay, sandy soils, producing aromatic, feminine wine) and Côte Brune (iron-rich schist, more structured, tannic). Up to 20% Viognier may be co-fermented with Syrah, adding floral lift and aromatic complexity — La Mouline uses ~11%.

Cote Rotie
01

Guigal's La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque — the 'La La La' cuvées — spent 42 months in 100% new oak barrels; Parker scored all three 100 points multiple times (1985, 1988, 1990, 1991), creating the modern Côte Rôtie auction market.

02

The Côte Blonde's sandy granite-clay soils produce aromatic, floral Syrah co-fermented with up to 15% Viognier; the resulting wine is more approachable and less tannic than the iron-rich schist of the Côte Brune across the road.

03

Côte Rôtie's terraced vineyards cannot be mechanically harvested — 100% hand-picking is required by law on gradients exceeding 35° — making production costs three to four times higher per hectare than in any flat Rhône appellation.

04

Augustine Vernay's Maison Rouge, from a single parcel of pre-phylloxera vines on the Côte Blonde, is the appellation's most historically significant old-vine bottling; at 150+ years old, these are among the oldest ungrafted vines in France.

In the Glass

Côte Rôtie Syrah is the most aromatic and floral in the Rhône: violet, lilac, bacon, black olive, and raspberry, with an iron-mineral backbone from the schist. Co-fermented Viognier adds jasmine and white peach lift without adding Viognier flavour directly. With age, the wine develops game, leather, graphite, and extraordinary complexity. Côte Blonde is silkier and more immediately expressive; Côte Brune is firmer, darker-fruited, and requires 15+ years of patience.
