Chateau Climens

Chateau Climens is the pre-eminent estate of Barsac and widely regarded as Sauternes' most consistently brilliant Premier Cru Classe after Yquem. Situated in Barsac on deep sandy soils over alios (iron-rich sandstone), Climens produces wines from 100% Semillon—the only premier cru in the region to do so—giving exceptional purity and aromatic finesse. Frederique Lurton managed the estate from 1992 until 2019, implementing biodynamic viticulture from 2010 onward. The wine's texture is defined by tension between richness and mineral acidity, distinguishing it from heavier Sauternes styles. With 1,126 lots averaging $183 per bottle and peaks to $2,878, Climens consistently attracts collector demand. The 2001 vintage is widely considered among the greatest Sauternes of the 20th century and commands substantial premiums. Additional strong vintages include 1988, 1989, 1990, 1997, 2007, and 2009. The second wine Cypres de Climens offers earlier-drinking access to the estate's Semillon. In 2020, Climens was acquired by a collective of investors and has continued biodynamic practice under new management.

Climens is the only Premier Cru Classe Sauternes produced entirely from Semillon, making it unique in the region; this single-variety approach produces wines with remarkable aromatic purity and mineral linearity not achievable with Muscadelle or Sauvignon Blanc blending.
The 2001 vintage is considered one of the greatest Barsac ever produced, achieving near-perfect critical scores; individual bottles have traded at auction above $200–300 for standard 750ml formats, while magnums regularly exceed $500.
Frederique Lurton converted the 29-hectare estate to biodynamic viticulture from 2010 onward, making Climens one of the few leading Sauternes châteaux to achieve certified organic and biodynamic status.
Barsac's sandy alios soils give Climens a distinctly lighter, more mineral profile than the clay-heavy soils of Yquem and other Sauternes estates—a geological differentiation consistently reflected in the wine's style and critical reception.

In the Glass

100% Semillon of golden richness balanced by nervy acidity: apricot, orange zest, beeswax, and honeysuckle with a mineral saline finish from the alios soils. Less overtly luscious than many Sauternes, Climens shows precision and tension—saffron, ginger, and dried citrus peel develop with age alongside a waxy, lanolin-like texture. Exceptional acidity gives great vintages 30–50 year aging potential.
