Chateau Coutet

Chateau Coutet is one of Barsac's Premier Cru Classé estates, sitting alongside Climens as the appellation's finest address. The estate covers 38 hectares in Barsac, producing Sémillon-dominant botrytised wines — typically 75–80% Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The standard Château Coutet is one of Barsac's most reliable producers, typically scoring 91–95 from Wine Advocate. The Cuvée Madame is the estate's prestige selection, produced only in exceptional botrytis years from the oldest and best-positioned parcels; it is one of the rarest and most sought-after Sauternes-Barsac wines, with fewer than 600 cases produced per vintage. Across 441 auction lots, Coutet averages $131 per bottle, with prices reaching $2,706 for the Cuvée Madame in exceptional years. Barsac's house style differs from Sauternes: slightly drier, with more pronounced citrus and floral notes compared to the richer, more honeyed Sauternes from Yquem and Rieussec. Coutet was acquired by the Baly family in 1977.

Cuvée Madame is produced only in exceptional botrytis years — approximately three times per decade — in quantities of fewer than 600 cases, making it one of the rarest Barsac wines.
Robert Parker awarded the 2001 Cuvée Madame a perfect 100 points, and Wine Advocate has given it scores of 99–100 in multiple vintages, placing it among the finest sweet wines made anywhere.
441 auction lots average $131 per bottle, driven upward by scarce Cuvée Madame lots; standard Coutet Barsac typically trades at $60–100 per bottle depending on vintage.
Coutet's 38-hectare Barsac estate produces wines with characteristic appellation finesse: slightly less dense than Sauternes neighbors, with pronounced citrus, floral, and mineral notes from the clay-limestone soils.

In the Glass

Chateau Coutet Barsac is elegant and precise rather than overwhelmingly rich: honey, orange marmalade, apricot, beeswax, and dried floral notes with vibrant citrus acidity that distinguishes Barsac from the heavier Sauternes style. Cuvée Madame intensifies all these elements dramatically — extraordinary concentration of saffron, dried apricot, crème brûlée, and tropical fruit with exceptional balance and almost indefinite ageing potential. The dry wine Opalie de Coutet offers fresh stone fruit and mineral freshness.
