Diamond Creek

Diamond Creek Vineyards in Diamond Mountain District, Calistoga, was established in 1968 by Al Brounstein and is among Napa Valley's earliest and most celebrated terroir-focused estates. Brounstein identified three geologically distinct soil types across his 20-acre property—Gravelly Meadow (volcanic ash-based), Volcanic Hill (volcanic soils), and Red Rock Terrace (iron-rich clay)—and vinified each separately, producing three single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons that have been made continuously since 1972. This single-vineyard philosophy, radical at the time, predated the current Napa obsession with site specificity by decades. A fourth wine, the Three Vineyard Blend, has been made in select years. At auction, 985 lots average $347 per bottle with prices reaching $4,780—among the highest averages for any Napa Cabernet estate. The 2016 vintage is the top auction year. Volcanic Hill is the most structured and longest-lived, while Gravelly Meadow is often considered the most elegant. The estate was acquired by Constellation Brands in 2004 then sold independently to private buyers in 2021, preserving boutique operations and small production of roughly 3,000 cases annually.

Diamond Creek was the first Napa Valley winery to produce and label three separate single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from geologically distinct soil types on a single property—a practice beginning in 1972 that helped establish the theoretical framework for Napa's later obsession with vineyard specificity.
Total production across all three Diamond Creek vineyards is approximately 3,000 cases annually, making it one of Napa's smallest and most scarce estates by volume; this restricted supply directly supports the $347 average auction price.
Volcanic Hill, planted on dark volcanic soils, is the most structured and age-worthy of the three wines, requiring 15–20+ years to fully integrate in top vintages like 1991, 2001, and 2013.
The 2019 Napa Valley wildfires caused significant smoke damage across Diamond Mountain, temporarily depressing secondary market prices for 2019–2020 vintages before they normalized as smoke taint concerns receded.

In the Glass

Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon: intense, structured, and mineral. Gravelly Meadow shows blackcurrant, violet, and crushed rock with elegant tannins. Volcanic Hill is darker—dark plum, graphite, iron, and volcanic ash with formidable structure requiring a decade of cellaring. Red Rock Terrace sits between: red fruit, cedar, and clay-mineral depth. All three share exceptional concentration and tannin architecture distinguishing Diamond Creek from softer valley-floor Napa Cabernets.
