Dow's

Dow's is one of the oldest and most respected Port houses, founded in 1798 and today part of the Symington Family portfolio alongside Graham's and Quinta do Vale Meão. The house is celebrated for producing Vintage Ports of exceptional dryness and finesse compared to many houses — a distinctive style characterised by mineral austerity, tobacco, cedar, and dried fruit rather than opulent sweetness. This elegant, structured approach makes Dow's an excellent pairing with food and particularly appreciated by collectors who prefer a less luscious Port style. The flagship estate is Quinta do Bomfim in the Douro Superior, which provides the core of the vintage blend and is bottled as a single-quinta wine in non-declaration years. Dow's also produces the excellent Quinta Senhora da Ribeira single-quinta wine. Historic declared vintages include 1955, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1977, 1983, 1985, 1991, 1994, 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2016. The aged Tawny expressions — 10, 20, 30, and 40-Year-Old — are also excellent. At auction, Dow's represents one of the most reliable sources of classic-style Vintage Port at prices somewhat below the most fashionable houses.
