Niepoort

Niepoort is one of the most innovative and quality-driven Port houses, a family-owned negociant founded in 1842 by the Dutch Niepoort family and still run today by the irrepressible Dirk Niepoort. While making exceptional Vintage and Aged Tawny Ports remains central to the estate, Dirk has pioneered a revolution in unfortified Douro wines, producing some of the valley's most celebrated red and white table wines under labels such as Redoma, Charme, and Batuta. The house is celebrated for Colheita Tawnies of extraordinary complexity, with a range going back to 1900. The Vintage Ports are made in a traditional style with long macerations and show remarkable concentration and longevity. Quinta de Napoles and Quinta do Carril provide key estate fruit. Dirk's restless innovation has made Niepoort something of an intellectual capital for the Douro: he has mentored a generation of young winemakers and championed indigenous varieties. At auction, Niepoort's Vintage Ports are among the most collectible from the Douro, while ancient Colheita bottlings from the 1930s to 1970s command exceptional prices for their rarity and extraordinary complexity.
