Dr. Loosen

Dr. Loosen is one of Germany's most internationally recognized Mosel Riesling estates, based in Bernkastel and managed by Ernst Loosen, who took over the family estate in 1988 and rapidly transformed it from a neglected property into a global benchmark. The estate owns parcels in some of the Mosel's greatest GG-classified sites: Erdener Prälat, Ürziger Würzgarten, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, and Bernkasteler Lay — all on steep slate terraces above the Mosel River. Loosen made key decisions early on: estate-bottling all production, reducing yields dramatically, and reviving old-vine parcels that had been declassified or sold in bulk. At auction, prices average $80 per bottle across 121 lots, with a range from $12 to $517. The Erdener Prälat Auslese Goldkapsel is the prestige cuvée, fetching the highest prices. Riesling Eiswein from Bernkasteler Lay represents the rarest and most valuable tier. Dr. Loosen's wines are consistent in quality, with Spätlese typically scoring 90–92 and top Auslese Goldkapsel reaching 95–97+.

Ernst Loosen holds parcels in five of the Mosel's elite sites including Erdener Prälat — a red-slate monopole site widely considered one of Germany's finest Riesling vineyards.
The Erdener Prälat Auslese Goldkapsel — selected barrels of the finest Auslese-level fruit — is the estate's most valuable wine, with auction prices reaching $517.
121 lots average $80 per bottle, offering access to multiple Mosel GG-quality sites at prices that make German Riesling among the best value per quality in the auction database.
Ernst Loosen revived neglected old-vine parcels in 1988 when he took over, including ungrafted 60–100-year-old Riesling vines on steep Mosel slate that had been commercially abandoned.

In the Glass

Dr. Loosen Rieslings span from ethereal Kabinett to concentrated Eiswein. The Spätlese and Auslese from Ürziger Würzgarten show spicy, exotic stone fruit and minerals from the volcanic red-slate soils. Wehlener Sonnenuhr is more floral and honeyed. Erdener Prälat is the most profound: slate-mineral, concentrated peach and apricot, and a nervy, persistent acidity that enables 30–50-year aging.
