Selbach-Oster

Selbach-Oster is a highly respected Mosel estate run by Johannes Selbach from the village of Zeltingen, farming steep slate slopes in some of the Mosel's most celebrated vineyard sites including Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Schlossberg, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Badstube. The estate covers approximately 20 hectares and is known for producing site-expressive Riesling at multiple Prädikat levels, from Kabinett to TBA. At auction, the portfolio spans Spätlese bottlings averaging $31–$35, Auslese including the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Rotlay at $48, and the Bernkasteler Badstube Beerenauslese at $117 — each reflecting the quality hierarchy of the Mosel Prädikat system. The 2001 vintage appears for the Zeltinger Schlossberg Spätlese, a classically structured year in the Mosel; 2012 appears across several cuvées, one of the decade's finest. Selbach-Oster is distinctive for producing wines across all sweetness levels with precision and site fidelity. Johannes Selbach is also known for exporting estate wines and for producing negociant wines under the J&H Selbach label, but the estate wines carry the Selbach-Oster designation and significantly higher quality. The Rotlay Auslese, from an old-vine selection within the Sonnenuhr, is the portfolio's signature prestige wine.
