Selbach-Oster

Selbach-Oster is a highly respected Mosel estate run by Johannes Selbach from the village of Zeltingen, farming steep slate slopes in some of the Mosel's most celebrated vineyard sites including Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Schlossberg, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Badstube. The estate covers approximately 20 hectares and is known for producing site-expressive Riesling at multiple Prädikat levels, from Kabinett to TBA. At auction, the portfolio spans Spätlese bottlings averaging $31–$35, Auslese including the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Rotlay at $48, and the Bernkasteler Badstube Beerenauslese at $117 — each reflecting the quality hierarchy of the Mosel Prädikat system. The 2001 vintage appears for the Zeltinger Schlossberg Spätlese, a classically structured year in the Mosel; 2012 appears across several cuvées, one of the decade's finest. Selbach-Oster is distinctive for producing wines across all sweetness levels with precision and site fidelity. Johannes Selbach is also known for exporting estate wines and for producing negociant wines under the J&H Selbach label, but the estate wines carry the Selbach-Oster designation and significantly higher quality. The Rotlay Auslese, from an old-vine selection within the Sonnenuhr, is the portfolio's signature prestige wine.

Selbach-Oster's Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese Rotlay is produced from a specific old-vine parcel within the Sonnenuhr site, averaging $48 at auction — the estate's most prized off-dry bottling.
The Bernkasteler Badstube Beerenauslese, averaging $117 at auction, reflects the extraordinary rarity and production challenge of botrytis-affected Riesling from this historically significant Mosel site.
Johannes Selbach farms approximately 20 hectares across four of the Mosel's premier slate-soil vineyard sites: Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Schlossberg, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Badstube.
The 2012 vintage appears as the top mark across multiple Selbach-Oster cuvées — widely acknowledged as one of the finest Mosel vintages of the 21st century for structured, ageworthy Riesling.

In the Glass

Mosel Riesling from steep blue-slate slopes: green apple, lime zest, white peach, and slate minerality with bright, electric acidity and varying levels of residual sweetness. Spätlese shows delicate sweetness balanced by acidity; Auslese adds honey and apricot; Beerenauslese reaches raisin and botrytis complexity. The slate soils give all wines a distinctive petrol-and-mineral character that develops with age. Off-dry to medium-sweet styles, never heavy.
