Joh. Jos. Prüm is Mosel's most iconic estate and the benchmark against which all Riesling is measured. The estate in Wehlen was established in the early 19th century and owns parcels in some of the Mosel's greatest sites: the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, and Bernkasteler Lay. Under Dr. Manfred Prüm and now his daughter Katharina, the estate has maintained absolute consistency: traditional winemaking with long, slow fermentations in old fuder barrels, extended lees contact, and bottling that often takes 18 months or more after harvest. The Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, Spätlese, and particularly the Goldkapsel and Lange Goldkapsel bottlings are considered the most perfectly balanced Rieslings in the world: the combination of fruit intensity, natural sweetness, and rapier acidity creating wines that evolve over three, four, or even five decades. The hallmark slate mineral character — petrol, stone fruit, white flowers — develops with age into extraordinary complexity. At auction, J.J. Prüm is among the most actively traded of all German estates, with the top Auslese Goldkapsel and GK Alte Reben bottlings commanding prices that rival Burgundy premiers crus. Older vintages — particularly from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s — are increasingly rare and valuable.
