Far Niente

Far Niente is one of Napa Valley's oldest continuously operating wineries, founded in 1885 in Oakville by John Benson and restored in 1979 by Gil Nickel, who rebuilt the historic stone winery and established the estate's modern identity around two wines: an Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon and an unwooded Chardonnay. The Cabernet, sourced from Oakville estate vineyards and supplemented by some purchased fruit, is a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, typically scoring 92–95 points from major critics across strong vintages. Far Niente's Chardonnay — fermented and aged in French oak but without malolactic fermentation — occupies a distinctive position in Napa: restrained, precise, and age-worthy in contrast to the richer, more creamy Chardonnays prevalent in the appellation. Dolce, the estate's late-harvest Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc dessert wine produced in collaboration with the estate, earns frequent 95–98-point scores and is among California's most collectable sweet wines, comparable in ambition to Château d'Yquem. With 702 auction lots averaging $100 per bottle, Far Niente trades at relatively accessible levels for its historical standing. The Cave Collection Cabernet assortment cases attract higher aggregate prices. The Nickel family's founding patron, Gil Nickel, passed away in 2003; stewardship has since continued under the Nickel family and longtime winemaker Larry Maguire.

Dolce, the estate's late-harvest Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc dessert wine, consistently earns 95–98 points and is widely considered California's benchmark botrytis wine, comparable in ambition to Sauternes first growths.

The Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon shows classic mid-valley richness: blackcurrant, dark plum, mocha, and cedar with a polished, approachable texture and fine-grained tannins. The Chardonnay is restrained and precise — apple, citrus, and hazelnut without heavy malolactic influence. Dolce is luscious and honeyed with botrytis apricot, marmalade, and spice — a dessert wine of serious aging potential.
