About Far Niente

John Benson founded Far Niente in Oakville in 1885. The name comes from the Italian 'dolce far niente', the sweetness of doing nothing. The winery was abandoned with Prohibition in 1919 and stood empty for decades. Gil Nickel restored it in 1979, and the building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it makes Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. In 2016 the private equity firm GI Partners bought a majority of Far Niente Wine Estates, which also includes Nickel & Nickel, EnRoute, Bella Union and Dolce.
