Hirsch Vineyards

Hirsch Vineyards is a pioneering Sonoma Coast estate founded by David Hirsch on the extreme western edge of the appellation above the Annapolis ridge, where Pacific fog and persistent wind create one of California's most challenging and distinctive Pinot Noir environments. The site was farmed for decades as a source vineyard for Williams Selyem and Kistler — two of California's most celebrated Pinot producers — before Hirsch launched his own label in 2002. The estate now produces a portfolio of single-block designates: San Andreas Fault, East Ridge, West Ridge, Raschen Ridge, and Block-specific bottlings. East Ridge and West Ridge each average over $210 from 21 lots apiece, while Raschen Ridge peaks at $283 from 10 lots — the estate's rarest and most sought-after designation. The standard Pinot Noir leads volume at 122 lots and $98 average, with 2006 as the portfolio benchmark. Chardonnay averages $103 from 14 lots — a smaller but credible white wine program from the same extreme coastal site. The 266-lot auction record reflects growing collector recognition of far-West Sonoma Coast as a distinct and irreplaceable terroir. Hirsch remains the definitive benchmark estate for that specific coastal character and one of California's most singular and irreplaceable Pinot Noir sites.

In the Glass

Hirsch Pinot Noir is extreme Sonoma Coast — cool, briny, and angular. Expect wild strawberry, dried rose, sea spray, white pepper, and an iron-mineral backbone from the ancient coastal soils. The single-block wines diverge in character: East Ridge is darker and denser; West Ridge more tensile and floral; Raschen Ridge the most concentrated and age-worthy. All show the nervous acidity and savouriness of a truly maritime site.
