Ruffino

Ruffino is one of Tuscany's largest and most recognized wine producers, founded in 1877 by cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino in Pontassieve, near Florence. The estate spans multiple properties across Chianti Classico, Montalcino, and Montepulciano. The flagship Riserva Ducale and Riserva Ducale Oro are Chianti Classico Riservas that built the brand's international recognition through the mid-twentieth century. Riserva Ducale Oro — produced from select Sangiovese in the estate's best years — is the premium expression, capable of 15–20 years of aging. Romitorio di Santedame is a Colorino-dominant Super Tuscan blend; Modus is a Cabernet-Merlot-Sangiovese IGT blend positioned as the flagship Super Tuscan. Alauda is a high-end prestige cuvée. Ruffino was acquired by Constellation Brands in 2011, bringing American marketing resources to an already well-distributed brand. At auction, the estate averages $60 per bottle across 224 lots with peaks reaching $923 — the latter likely for rare vintage Riserva Ducale Oro or the prestige Alauda from exceptional years. The broad portfolio and wide distribution result in significant auction volume but modest average pricing for a Tuscany brand of this profile. The Alauda prestige cuvée — produced in limited quantity from the estate's finest parcels — represents Ruffino's attempt to compete at the premium Tuscany tier above its commercial Riserva Ducale range.
