Pommard Les Épenots Premier Cru

Pommard · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Les Épenots is the largest Premier Cru in Pommard, covering approximately 11 hectares on the mid-slope north of the village centre, directly adjacent to the Beaune border. The vineyard is divided into Grands Épenots (lower portion) and Petits Épenots (upper portion), with the Grands Épenots generally regarded as producing the rounder, more generous expression. Within the broader Épenots climat lies the Clos des Épenaux — a 5.2-hectare walled parcel that is the monopole of Domaine du Comte Armand and the village's most celebrated single-estate wine. The Clos des Épenaux produces a wine of greater concentration, structure, and longevity than the general Épenots appellation, justifying its separate identity. Beyond Comte Armand, Domaine de Courcel produces a 'Grand Clos des Épenots' from a well-positioned parcel, and Pousse d'Or works the Les Jarollières sub-parcel within the broader zone.

Pommard Les Épenots Premier Cru
01

The Clos des Épenaux, a 5.2-hectare walled monopole within Les Épenots belonging entirely to Domaine du Comte Armand, is considered the most consistent and complex wine produced in Pommard.

02

Les Épenots is the largest Premier Cru in Pommard, meaning the vineyard has more diverse ownership and a wider range of quality than the tighter, single-parcel Clos des Épenaux within it.

03

Domaine du Comte Armand's Clos des Épenaux is notable for having been managed over decades by a succession of talented winemakers, yet maintaining consistent quality — a testament to the quality of the underlying terroir.

04

The proximity of Les Épenots to the Beaune border — where the soils shift to slightly less iron-rich composition — means Épenots wines are generally more approachable and less tannic than Les Rugiens to the south.

Pommard Les Épenots and Clos des Épenaux offer a slightly more approachable interpretation of Pommard than the iron-driven power of Les Rugiens: dark cherry, plum, black olive, and subtle earthy notes underpin a medium-full palate with firm but less aggressive tannins and a more generous mid-palate. The Clos des Épenaux from Comte Armand adds concentration, precision, and extraordinary length. Both benefit from 8–15 years of ageing, developing spice, truffle, and dried fruit complexity as the tannins soften.
