Pommard

Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Pommard is the most tannic, most structured, and most long-lived red wine village in the Côte de Beaune. Sitting between Beaune to the north and Volnay to the south, the village's vineyards contain higher proportions of iron-bearing clay and red Oolitic limestone, producing Pinot Noir that is darker, firmer, and more earthy than the silky finesse of Volnay next door. No Grand Crus exist, but the Premier Cru vineyard Les Rugiens-Bas is regarded as near-Grand Cru in quality — deep, dark, and structured from soils rich in iron oxide, which historically gave the wines a distinctive russet tinge. Les Épenots is the largest Premier Cru, offering a more approachable, rounder style. The Clos des Épenaux, a 5.2-hectare walled parcel within the Épenots, is the monopole of Domaine du Comte Armand and produces some of the most consistently age-worthy wine in the appellation. Domaine de Montille rounds out the prestige producers alongside Joseph Voillot and Lejeune.

Pommard
01

Pommard Les Rugiens-Bas is regularly described as deserving Grand Cru status — its dense, iron-rich red soils produce the deepest-coloured, most tannic, and most long-lived wines in the village.

02

The Clos des Épenaux — Comte Armand's 5.2-hectare walled monopole within Les Épenots — is Pommard's most consistently age-worthy Premier Cru, capable of developing for 25+ years in top vintages.

03

Pommard's distinctive earthy, iron-inflected character comes from the Bathonian limestone bedrock interspersed with iron oxide — the same geological marker that gives the village its name (Pagus Polmarius, place of apple trees, but also linked to Pomona).

04

Unlike neighbouring Volnay, Pommard produces almost no white wine — the entire appellation is essentially 100% Pinot Noir, making it one of the most single-varietal major Burgundy villages.

In the Glass

Pommard Pinot Noir is the most powerful and structured expression of red Burgundy on the Côte de Beaune: dark cherry, plum, and blackcurrant lead the fruit; iron, earth, and dried herbs add complexity; firm, mouth-coating tannins demand patience. Les Rugiens brings the most concentration and grip; Les Épenots is more generous and round. Village-level Pommard offers immediate dark cherry charm but still has more structure than Volnay. With age, truffle, cedar, and tobacco emerge over a base of iron-rich earth.
