Vouvray

Loire · France · Wine Auction Prices

Vouvray, produced on tuffeau limestone slopes above the village of Vouvray just east of Tours, is the Loire Valley's most complete expression of Chenin Blanc. The appellation covers 2,000 hectares and produces every style from bone-dry Sec and off-dry Demi-Sec through Moelleux (late-harvest) and Pétillant (lightly sparkling) to fully sparkling Crémant. The defining estates are Domaine Huet — whose three cuvées, Le Haut-Lieu, Clos du Bourg, and Le Mont, have been produced biodynamically since 2000 — and Domaine de la Clos Naudin (Philippe Foreau), which produces Moelleux Réserve in the finest vintages. Vouvray's acid structure is the secret to its legendary longevity: the 1947, 1959, and 1989 Huet Moelleux vintages are still remarkable at 60–75 years of age. At auction, Huet's 1er Trie cuvées (the first selective harvest pass, concentrating botrytised grapes) represent the appellation's peak; Cuvée Constance is produced in only exceptional vintages from even more concentrated selections. Demi-Sec and Sec are underrated auction values, showing the same structural complexity as the sweet wines but with food-versatile dryness.

Vouvray
01

Domaine Huet's Vouvray spans three single-vineyard cuvées — Le Haut-Lieu (south-facing plateau), Clos du Bourg (below the village), and Le Mont (clay over tuffeau) — each expressing distinct terroir from old-vine Chenin Blanc farmed biodynamically since 2000.

02

Vouvray's finest Moelleux 1ère Trie cuvées are harvested in multiple passes (tries) through the vineyard, selecting only the most botrytised grapes; in exceptional vintages like 1989 and 1997, residual sugar exceeds 200 g/L yet electric acidity prevents any cloying character.

03

Domaine de la Clos Naudin (Philippe Foreau) produces Vouvray Moelleux Réserve only in three-star vintages — 1989, 1990, 1995, 1997, 2002, 2018 — from 100% estate Chenin Blanc on premier cru tuffeau soils below the village.

04

Sparkling Vouvray (Pétillant and Crémant) accounts for 40% of appellation production in cool vintages when sugar accumulation is insufficient for still wine; the secondary fermentation occurs in bottle using the traditional method with the same Chenin Blanc base.

In the Glass

Vouvray Sec is tightly wound with green apple, quince, ginger, and a chalky mineral finish from tuffeau soils. Demi-Sec adds honeyed apricot and mirabelle plum while retaining electric Chenin acidity. Moelleux expands into golden plum, saffron, and beeswax with the oxidative richness that age brings; 20-year-old Moelleux develops a nutty, almost Sherry-like complexity while retaining precision.
