Eola-Amity Hills

Oregon · United States · Wine Auction Prices

The Eola-Amity Hills AVA, south of McMinnville in the central Willamette Valley, produces Oregon's most complex and food-oriented Pinot Noir, shaped by two distinctive influences absent from other sub-regions: marine sedimentary soils (ancient seabed lifted by volcanic activity) and the Van Duzer Corridor — a gap in the Coast Range through which cold Pacific air rushes each afternoon, dropping temperatures by 10–15°C and extending the growing season by weeks. The soils — Nekia volcanic and Willakenzie marine sedimentary, plus patches of Jory — give wines a more savoury, herbaceous character than Jory-dominant Dundee Hills. Antica Terra, the Hills' most prestigious producer, uses ancient-vine material from Temperance Hill (planted 1981) and Columbia Gorge to produce Botanica, Antikythera, and Ceras — three single-vineyard cuvées at $160–300 per bottle that represent Oregon's price ceiling. Evening Land's Seven Springs Vineyard (former Temperance Hill ownership) and Cristom (Germaine, Jessie, Louise, Marjorie) are significant second-tier producers. The Van Duzer effect means harvest typically runs 2–3 weeks later than Dundee Hills, producing wines of greater acidity and longevity.

The Van Duzer Corridor — a gap in the Coast Range through which cold Pacific air rushes each afternoon from June through October — drops temperatures 10–15°C in Eola-Amity Hills each day, extending the growing season 2–3 weeks beyond Dundee Hills and producing Pinot Noir of greater acidity and age potential.

02

Antica Terra's Botanica Pinot Noir, produced by Maggie Harrison from ancient Temperance Hill vineyard material planted 1981, is vinified with no added SO2, whole cluster, ambient yeast, and minimal new oak; the resulting wine commands $180–220 per bottle and is Oregon's most critically acclaimed single-vineyard Pinot.

03

Cristom Vineyards farms four estate Pinot Noir blocks named for the women in proprietor Paul Gerrie's life — Germaine, Jessie, Louise, and Marjorie — each planted to different Pinot Noir clones on Nekia volcanic and Willakenzie sedimentary soils, demonstrating the Hills' clone and soil diversity.

04

Evening Land Seven Springs Vineyard (formerly Temperance Hill), at 600 feet elevation in the Eola-Amity Hills, contains one of the oldest Pinot Noir plantings in the AVA (1981); the site's marine sedimentary soils produce wines with distinctive herbal, spiced, and floral notes different from the Jory-dominant Dundee Hills.

In the Glass

Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir has the Willamette's most distinctive aromatic profile: bright red cherry, raspberry, violet, lavender, and a persistent herbal-floral quality from the Van Duzer marine influence and ancient marine sedimentary soils. Tannin is finer than Dundee Hills but more persistent; acidity is the highest in the Willamette, giving wines superb tension and 15–25 year ageing potential. Antica Terra Botanica adds exotic spice, iron, and an almost Vosne-Romanée complexity that makes it the region's most discussed wine.
