About Willamette Valley
Willamette Valley is Oregon's first and largest AVA, established in December 1983 following a petition led by David Adelsheim. It covers the drainage basin of the Willamette River, from the Columbia River south to beyond Eugene and from the Coast Range east to the Cascades. The region won notice when Eyrie Vineyards' 1975 Pinot Noir Reserve placed tenth among Pinots at the 1979 Wine Olympics. Today the AVA holds most of the state's wineries, about 736, with roughly 27,000 acres under vine. It is best known for Pinot noir and Pinot gris and contains eleven smaller AVAs, including Dundee Hills and Eola-Amity Hills.
