Dundee Hills

Oregon · United States · Wine Auction Prices

The Dundee Hills, a compact volcanic formation rising to 450 metres above the Willamette Valley floor north of Dundee, is Oregon's most famous and most closely studied wine sub-region. The defining characteristic is Jory soil — a deep, well-drained basalt-derived reddish clay loam formed by volcanic activity 15–17 million years ago — which produces Pinot Noir of extraordinary mineral intensity, dark fruit, and structure. Eyrie Vineyards planted the Dundee Hills' first commercial vines in 1965; Domaine Drouhin Oregon arrived in 1988 and is now synonymous with the Hills' finest expression of Burgundian-influenced Pinot Noir. Archery Summit, Stoller, Bergström, and Domaine Serene all farm Jory-soil Dundee Hills parcels. DDO's Laurène single-vineyard Pinot Noir — from a steep 25-acre Jory block — is the Hills' most auction-collected wine: typically $80–100 per bottle, aged 20+ months in French oak with a Burgundian reserve. Thomas Vineyard's Pinot Noir, from ancient Jory soils at the Hills' highest elevations, regularly achieves $190+ per bottle. The 2008, 2012, 2014, and 2018 vintages are the Dundee Hills' greatest years.

Dundee Hills
01

Jory soil — a deep, volcanic basalt-derived clay loam 15–17 million years old — covers most of the Dundee Hills and is unique in Oregon for its exceptional drainage, heat retention, and mineral complexity; Pinot Noir from pure Jory blocks typically shows darker fruit, firmer tannin, and more mineral depth than valley-floor examples.

02

Domaine Drouhin Oregon was established in 1988 after Robert Drouhin tasted the 1975 Eyrie South Block Reserve at the 1980 rematch tasting; Véronique Drouhin-Boss, Robert's daughter and DDO's winemaker since 1987, applies the family's Burgundy philosophy — whole cluster, cold soak, basket press — to Jory-soil Pinot Noir.

03

Archery Summit's Premier Cuvée, Goldie, and Red Hills Estate vineyards from the Dundee Hills' central Jory block demonstrate the sub-AVA's consistent ability to produce structured, ageworthy Pinot Noir; the estate farms 100% estate fruit across 100 Jory-soil acres.

04

Thomas Vineyard's Pinot Noir, sourced from the Dundee Hills' highest-elevation Jory blocks at 400–450m, achieves Oregon's highest per-bottle prices for a vineyard-designated wine outside Antica Terra — typically $190–220 — reflecting old-vine intensity from parcels planted in the 1980s.

In the Glass

Dundee Hills Pinot Noir from Jory volcanic soils has a distinctly darker, more mineral profile than other Willamette Valley sub-AVAs: black cherry, blueberry, dark plum, and iron-volcanic minerality alongside the standard cherry-cranberry red fruit. Tannin is firmer and structure more pronounced; the wines are built for 10–20 years of cellaring. Domaine Drouhin's Laurène adds silky elegance from whole-cluster and long barrel aging; Thomas Vineyard's density is remarkable from old-vine Jory concentration.
