About Duckhorn Vineyards
Dan and Margaret Duckhorn founded Duckhorn Vineyards outside St. Helena in 1976 with a small group of investors. The first vintage, 1978, was just 800 cases each of Cabernet Sauvignon and of Merlot, the Merlot from the Three Palms Vineyard near Calistoga. Championing Merlot as a serious varietal wine became the winery's calling card. It planted its first vineyards in 1981 and from the late 1980s bought estate sites across Napa, now nine vineyards including Three Palms, Monitor Ledge and Stout on Howell Mountain. The group expanded into Goldeneye, Decoy, Calera and Kosta Browne. It passed through private-equity owners and a 2021 listing before Butterfly Equity bought it in 2024.
