About Harlan Estate

Real-estate developer Bill Harlan began looking for land in 1978, toured Europe in 1980 with introductions from Robert Mondavi, and in 1984 bought a 240-acre hillside property in western Oakville with the aim of making a California first growth under a 200-year family plan. Planting started in 1985 on land never farmed for vines. The 1987–1989 wines were never released; the first commercial vintage, 1990, went on sale in 1996, and the second wine, The Maiden, began with 1995. About 40 acres are planted, mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, on volcanic soils. Bob Levy led winegrowing from the start, followed by Cory Empting in 2008.
