About Ornellaia
Marchese Lodovico Antinori founded Ornellaia on the Tuscan coast at Bolgheri, beside Tenuta San Guido, home of Sassicaia, working with winemaker Tibor Gál. The vineyards went in from 1981, the first vintage was 1985 and a winery followed in 1987. Robert Mondavi bought into the estate from 1999. After Constellation acquired Mondavi, the Frescobaldi family took full control in 2005. Its Bordeaux-style red is one of Italy's best-known Super Tuscans. The estate also makes Le Serre Nuove, Le Volte and the Merlot Masseto, which led to a 2012 renaming as Ornellaia e Masseto. About 99 hectares are planted in two blocks either side of Bolgheri's cypress avenue.
