About Ridge
Vines were first planted on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1885 by Osea Perrone, a San Francisco doctor, who made the first Monte Bello wine in 1892. In 1959 four Stanford Research Institute engineers, among them David Bennion, bought the property and rebonded the winery as Ridge for the 1962 vintage, adding Zinfandel in 1964. Paul Draper took over winemaking around 1970–71 and led it for 47 vintages. The 1971 Monte Bello Cabernet placed fifth at the 1976 Judgment of Paris and first in the 30th-anniversary rematch. Japan's Otsuka bought Ridge in 1987; Lytton Springs in Dry Creek Valley was added in 1991.
