About Shafer

The Stags Leap District hillside that Shafer farms had grown grapes since 1880, but it was neglected when Chicago publishing executive John Shafer and his wife Betty bought it in 1972. John replanted the slopes to Cabernet Sauvignon in the mid-1970s and made the first Shafer Cabernet in 1978. His son Doug joined as winemaker in 1983, and Elias Fernandez arrived as assistant in 1984, becoming winemaker ten years later. The estate grew to four ranches in Stags Leap, Oak Knoll and Carneros. Its best-known wine is Hillside Select, from estate hillside blocks. In 2022 the family sold the winery to Korea's Shinsegae Property, with Doug Shafer staying on.
