Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is the historic heart of Volnay, with an estate shaped by the Marquis family since 1804 and its modern reputation forged by Sem d'Angerville in the 1920s. Sem was a pioneer of domaine-bottling — he began estate-bottling in the 1920s after personally confronting the corrupt négociant blending practices of the era, and became one of the founding figures of the INAO and Appellation Contrôlée system. His son Jacques made 52 consecutive vintages from 1952, consolidating a worldwide reputation for elegant, terroir-driven Volnay. Guillaume d'Angerville took over following Jacques's sudden death in 2003, converting the entire estate to biodynamic viticulture by 2009. The domaine's 15 hectares are entirely in Volnay and Pommard, with the 2.15-hectare Clos des Ducs monopole as its crown jewel — a steep, chalk-and-limestone slope at Volnay's highest elevation. At auction, Clos des Ducs commands $400–$800 per bottle, and Volnay Champans is considered one of the finest Premier Crus in the Côte de Beaune.

Sem d'Angerville pioneered domaine-bottling in Burgundy in the 1920s, personally confronting négociant fraud and co-founding the INAO and Appellation Contrôlée regulations — a legacy that changed how Burgundy is made and sold worldwide.
The Clos des Ducs monopole (2.15 ha) occupies the highest and steepest slope in Volnay; its chalk-and-limestone soils produce Pinot Noir of extraordinary floral delicacy and aging potential, with top vintages lasting 30+ years.
Jacques d'Angerville made 52 consecutive vintages from 1952 until his sudden death in 2003; Guillaume d'Angerville completed biodynamic certification of the entire estate in 2009, maintaining the domaine's leading position in Côte de Beaune.
Guillaume significantly expanded the domaine's white wine program after 2003, adding Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru parcels to complement the traditional red Volnay focus that made the family name.

In the Glass

D'Angerville Volnay is the standard for the appellation's delicate, aristocratic style — pale ruby in colour, with rose, violet, and red cherry on the nose and a silky, gossamer texture that belies impressive aging potential. Clos des Ducs has the most concentration and structure; Champans is plush and generously fruited; Taillepieds is firm and mineral with extraordinary finesse.
