Fuligni

Fuligni is a historic Brunello producer based in Montalcino town, with vineyard holdings in the northeastern sector of the appellation. The estate has been in the Fuligni family for generations, with Roberto Fuligni and his niece Maria Flora overseeing production. The northeastern position of Fuligni's vineyards — at higher elevation, with more influence from Apennine winds — produces Brunellos of classic elegance, moderate extraction, and firm acidity: wines built for long ageing rather than early consumption. The flagship Brunello di Montalcino is aged in large Slavonian oak botti, maintaining traditional winemaking philosophy. The Riserva is produced only in exceptional years. Across 475 auction lots, the estate averages $85 per bottle with prices reaching $1,673 for older Riserva vintages. Fuligni's profile at auction skews strongly toward value — the regular Brunello typically sells for $80–120 while delivering complexity comparable to producers charging double. Critics including Wine Advocate have repeatedly awarded Fuligni Brunellos 94–97 points in great vintages such as 2010, 2012, and 2016.

Fuligni's vineyards occupy the northeastern sector of Montalcino at higher elevations than most producers, producing Brunellos with characteristic finesse, bright acidity, and exceptional ageing potential.
The Brunello Riserva is produced only in outstanding years and has earned scores of 96–97 from Wine Advocate; the 2010 Riserva is considered one of the finest wines in the estate's history.
475 auction lots average $85 per bottle — significantly below the Brunello appellation average for comparable quality, making it one of the best-value Brunello producers at auction.
The estate uses only large Slavonian oak botti for ageing, avoiding new oak and barriques entirely, preserving the pure expression of Sangiovese Grosso fruit and terroir.

In the Glass

Fuligni Brunello is northern Montalcino in character: sour red cherry, dried rose, iron, mineral earth, and forest undergrowth with high acidity and firm, linear tannins. The style is traditional and austere in youth, demanding patience — typically 10 years for the standard Brunello, 15+ for the Riserva. With age, the wines develop extraordinary complexity: tobacco, truffle, leather, and dried flowers. Less opulent than southern Montalcino Brunellos, but arguably more complete and age-worthy.
