Inglenook

Inglenook is one of California's most historically significant estates, founded in 1879 by Finnish sea captain Gustave Niebaum on a 2,000-acre Rutherford property. After a period of ownership by Heublein that degraded the brand, Francis Ford Coppola purchased the estate in stages beginning in 1975, restored the Inglenook name in 2011, and now produces Cask Cabernet Sauvignon as the flagship. The estate's depth at auction spans from a 1969 Pinot Noir to current releases. The Cask Cabernet Sauvignon is the primary modern wine (88 lots, $194, 2012 peak), while the Reserve Cask (58 lots, $79, best 1985 vintage) reflects the estate's pre-Coppola history. Rubicon—the top wine during Coppola's first era—averages $144 across 54 lots (2018 best). Particularly notable are the 1978 Charbono ($223, 10 lots) and 1969 Pinot Noir ($120), reflecting the estate's historical depth and collectible early California vintages. Prices peak at $1,583.

Inglenook was founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum and is one of California's oldest continuously operating wineries; Francis Ford Coppola restored the historic name in 2011 after decades under Heublein ownership.
The 1978 Charbono averages $223 per bottle—the highest per-bottle average in the database for a secondary wine—reflecting collector demand for historically important pre-Parker California varietals.
Cask Cabernet Sauvignon, the modern flagship, averages $194 per bottle across 88 lots with the 2012 vintage most-traded; Rubicon averages $144 across 54 lots.
A 1969 Pinot Noir in the auction database demonstrates the estate's extraordinary historical depth, with functional examples of Rutherford wine from over 50 years ago still appearing at auction.

In the Glass

Rutherford Bench Cabernet Sauvignon: blackcurrant, dusty earth, dried herbs, tobacco, and cedar on a classic medium-full body with the 'Rutherford dust' texture distinctive to this sub-AVA. The Cask is structured and age-worthy; Rubicon is more polished and approachable younger. Historic Charbono shows the funky, ferrous, full-bodied character of this obscure Italian varietal grown in Napa's warm benchland.
