Quintessa

Quintessa is a 170-acre biodynamic estate in Rutherford owned by the Huneeus family (also behind Veramonte in Chile), producing a single red wine from a naturally amphitheater-shaped volcanic knoll overlooking the Napa River. Founded in 1990, the estate produces approximately 10,000 cases annually of a Bordeaux blend (primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Carménère) from certified-biodynamic vineyards. The wine trades in 85 auction lots at $122 average with the 2001 vintage most-traded and prices capped at $287. The $287 price ceiling reflects Quintessa's positioning in the premium but not ultra-premium Napa tier—comparable to Rubicon or Dominus in price level but below Opus One, Harlan, or Screaming Eagle. The 2001 vintage represents the estate's early critical peak. Quintessa's biodynamic certification (among the first in Napa) and the estate's natural amphitheater topography—which creates distinctive air drainage and frost protection—are key selling points for quality-conscious collectors.

Quintessa is among Napa Valley's earliest certified biodynamic estates, farming 170 acres on a natural volcanic amphitheater that provides distinctive air drainage and microclimate uniformity.
The estate produces approximately 10,000 cases annually of a single Bordeaux blend, incorporating Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Carménère—one of very few California wines using Carménère.
The 2001 vintage is the most-traded in the database, representing the estate's early critical peak; auction prices average $122 with a ceiling of $287 across 85 lots.
The Huneeus family also owns Veramonte in Chile; Quintessa's biodynamic practices and single-wine approach reflect a conscious positioning as a quality-focused, terroir-driven Napa estate.

In the Glass

Rutherford volcanic-knoll Bordeaux blend: cassis, dark cherry, dried herbs, cedar, and iron-mineral on a medium-full, balanced frame. The Carménère addition contributes a subtle green herb and dark spice complexity unusual in Napa. Biodynamic farming seems to contribute freshness and precision rather than richer extraction. The style is polished and approachable at 5–8 years but gains complexity with a decade of cellaring.
