Isole e Olena

Isole e Olena is a Chianti Classico estate in the commune of San Donato in Poggio, owned and operated by Paolo De Marchi since 1976. De Marchi, a Piedmontese by birth who adopted Tuscany with singular conviction, has built one of the most respected reputations in the appellation through rigorous viticultural standards and winemaking clarity. The flagship Cepparello — a 100% Sangiovese Supertuscan first produced in 1980 — is one of the defining wines of Tuscany, consistently demonstrating what Sangiovese can achieve outside the Brunello framework. The Chianti Classico is equally precise: a benchmark for the appellation's potential. The estate also produces a small amount of Collezione Privata Cabernet Sauvignon. Across 445 auction lots, Isole e Olena averages $95 per bottle, with prices reaching $2,629 for older magnum-format Cepparello vintages. The 2010, 2015, and 2016 Cepparello have each earned scores of 96–98 from Wine Advocate and James Suckling. De Marchi's wines are defined by precision and minerality rather than extraction, making them among the most age-worthy in Chianti Classico.

Cepparello, a 100% Sangiovese first made in 1980, is one of the original Supertuscans and remains one of Chianti Classico's most compelling single-variety wine expressions.
Paolo De Marchi, a native Piedmontese, has farmed Isole e Olena since 1976, and his rigorous approach to viticulture and winemaking has earned him the distinction of being one of Tuscany's most respected producers.
The 2015 Cepparello earned 98 points from James Suckling and 97 from Wine Advocate, with auction prices reaching $300–400 per bottle for this landmark vintage.
445 auction lots average $95 per bottle — excellent value for one of Chianti Classico's finest estates, with significant upside for top Cepparello vintages trading well above the mean.

In the Glass

Isole e Olena Sangiovese is defined by minerality, precision, and restraint: sour cherry, dried rose, iron, and tobacco with firm but fine tannins and excellent linear acidity. Cepparello adds depth and dark fruit concentration while remaining varietal in character. The Chianti Classico is more open and accessible. The Collezione Privata Cabernet Sauvignon is surprisingly lean and structured. All wines benefit from extended cellaring — 10+ years for Cepparello.
