Stella di Campalto (Podere S.Giuseppe)

Stella di Campalto (Podere San Giuseppe) is one of Brunello di Montalcino's most collectible micro-estates, farming approximately 5 hectares of certified organic and biodynamic Sangiovese at very low yields from old vines on the eastern slopes of Montalcino. The Pieri family produces tiny quantities — typically 8,000–12,000 bottles across all cuvées — without use of new oak barriques, favoring large Slavonian casks and cement vats to preserve the purity of the Sangiovese and the site's mineral terroir. Stella di Campalto became a cult discovery in the mid-2000s when critics began recognizing its combination of extreme terroir fidelity, impeccable biodynamic farming, and minimal-intervention winemaking that produced wines of extraordinary concentration and clarity. The Brunello di Montalcino trades at $250–$400 per bottle and the Riserva at $400–$700 for exceptional vintages in the secondary market. At auction, 116 lots average $350 per bottle — among the highest of any Montalcino estate in this database — reflecting both the scarcity of the wines and the intensity of collector demand from buyers who discovered the estate through critical reviews. The 2010 and 2012 Brunello and the 2010 Riserva are particularly sought-after, earning near-perfect scores from multiple critics. The estate's biodynamic certification since the 1990s predates the current movement's wider adoption in Montalcino.

Stella di Campalto farms approximately 5 hectares of certified organic and biodynamic Sangiovese at yields rarely exceeding 20 hl/ha — among the lowest in Brunello di Montalcino — producing 8,000–12,000 bottles in total annually.
The estate uses no new oak barriques, aging exclusively in large Slavonian casks and cement, a traditional approach that preserves Sangiovese's native acidity and terroir mineral character without barrel-derived flavors.
The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino earned 97 points from Antonio Galloni (Vinous) and trades at $350–$500 per bottle at auction — among the highest realizations of any Brunello from that legendary vintage.
Stella di Campalto was among Montalcino's earliest certified biodynamic estates, converting in the 1990s before the movement gained traction in Tuscany, positioning the estate as a pioneer of minimal-intervention farming in the region.

In the Glass

Pure, high-acid Sangiovese from eastern Montalcino: sour cherry, rose petal, iron, tobacco, and dried herbs on the nose. The palate is structured and austere in youth, demanding 10–15 years for the tannins to resolve. No new oak means no vanilla or toast — the fruit and mineral terroir are unobscured. The Riserva adds greater complexity of dried fig, licorice, and earthy depth, requiring even longer cellaring.
