Aloxe-Corton

Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Aloxe-Corton sits at the northern tip of the Côte de Beaune where the escarpment bends to form the hill of Corton — a distinctive rounded butte visible from kilometres away. The hill of Corton is one of the most complex Grand Cru terroirs in Burgundy: the summit and upper flanks produce Corton-Charlemagne, the only white Grand Cru in the northern Côte de Beaune, while the mid-slope red soils yield Corton Grand Cru under many individually named climat labels — Bressandes, Clos du Roi, Renardes, Grèves, Maréchaudes, Pougets, Languettes, and more. At approximately 100 hectares, Corton is the largest red Grand Cru in all of Burgundy. Corton-Charlemagne covers 53 hectares on the upper slopes and is dominated by Domaine Bonneau du Martray, whose 9.5-hectare holding makes it the largest owner. Coche-Dury's tiny Corton-Charlemagne bottling is the most sought-after, comparable in price to his Meursault Perrières. The red Corton Grands Crus span a range of styles from Tollot-Beaut's approachable Bressandes to the more structured Clos du Roi.

Aloxe-Corton
01

Corton is the largest red Grand Cru in all of Burgundy at approximately 100 hectares — more than ten times the size of Chambertin — and is divided among dozens of named parcels and producers.

02

Corton-Charlemagne is reputedly named after Emperor Charlemagne, who had white vines planted here in the 8th century to avoid staining his beard with red wine; the story may be apocryphal but the wine's quality is not.

03

Coche-Dury produces fewer than 200 cases of Corton-Charlemagne annually; their bottles sell for over $1,800 on average at auction and are among the most allocated white Burgundies in the world.

04

The hill of Corton is unique in Burgundy for producing both Grand Cru red (Corton) and Grand Cru white (Corton-Charlemagne) from the same geological butte, with the whites sitting higher on the slope where limestone dominates.

In the Glass

Corton-Charlemagne is the most austere and architecturally structured of all Côte de Beaune white Grand Crus: white flower, citrus zest, and honeysuckle when young, developing towards toasted almond, flint, and warming spice with age. Red Corton Grand Cru ranges in style by climat — Bressandes is the most perfumed and accessible; Clos du Roi the most structured and tannic; Renardes and Grèves sit in between. All share a certain earthiness and iron-driven depth that distinguishes them from the more silky reds of Volnay.
