Rutherford

Napa Valley · USA · Wine Auction Prices

Rutherford is one of Napa Valley's historic heartlands, home to some of California's oldest continuously farmed Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and the source of what wine legend André Tchelistcheff called 'Rutherford Dust' — a distinctive earthy, dusty minerality that he identified as unique to the appellation's alluvial soils. The Rutherford Bench, a series of coalescing alluvial fans from the Mayacamas Mountains, produces the most complex expression of this dusty minerality: Inglenook (formerly Niebaum-Coppola), Beaulieu Vineyard's Georges de Latour Private Reserve, and Rubicon Estate are the historical anchors of the appellation. Beaulieu's Georges de Latour, produced continuously since 1936 and the longest-running premium California Cabernet, was the wine Tchelistcheff used to establish the Rutherford Dust concept. Caymus Vineyards, founded in 1971, has become one of Napa's most commercially successful estates and produces one of the most widely traded California Cabernets at auction — particularly the Special Selection cuvée. The AVA was established in 1993 and covers approximately 1,600 hectares of the valley floor and lower benchland.

Rutherford
01

Winemaker André Tchelistcheff coined the term 'Rutherford Dust' to describe the distinctive earthy, dusty minerality he tasted in Beaulieu Vineyard's Georges de Latour Private Reserve — a characteristic now universally associated with the Rutherford Bench's alluvial soils.

02

Beaulieu Vineyard's Georges de Latour Private Reserve, produced continuously since 1936, is the longest-running prestige California Cabernet Sauvignon; pre-1980 vintages appear regularly at speciality California wine auctions and command significant premiums.

03

Inglenook, restored by Francis Ford Coppola to its 19th-century prestige after the Niebaum-Coppola era, produces Rubicon from the original Gustave Niebaum estate planted in the 1880s — one of California's most historically significant terroirs.

04

Caymus Special Selection has been awarded Wine Spectator Wine of the Year twice (1984 and 2002), making it one of the most commercially recognised California Cabernets globally and one of the most widely traded Napa labels at auction.

In the Glass

Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon has a distinctive earthy, almost dusty minerality (Rutherford Dust) beneath the blackcurrant and plum fruit that gives the wines a savoury complexity absent in more fruit-forward appellations. The tannins are firm and structured; acidity is moderate. These wines typically require 8–12 years to open fully and can age 20–30 years. Georges de Latour adds an herbaceous complexity; Caymus Special Selection adds plushness and concentration from extended maceration.
