About Biondi-Santi

Biondi-Santi is the family firm credited with creating modern Brunello di Montalcino. In the mid-19th century Clemente Santi selected Sangiovese vines in Montalcino for a pure, long-ageing wine. Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, his grandson and a veteran of Garibaldi's campaigns, released in 1888 the first modern Brunello, aged for over a decade in large casks. By the end of the Second World War Biondi-Santi was the only commercial Brunello producer in official records, having declared just four vintages: 1888, 1891, 1925 and 1945. Its prestige then drew other producers into Brunello.
