About Caymus
The Wagner family has grown grapes on its Rutherford land since the 1940s, selling the fruit to other wineries until Charlie and Lorna Wagner and their son Chuck opened Caymus in 1972 with 240 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. The name comes from George Yount's Rancho Caymus land grant, itself named after Wappo villages. The vineyard was planted in the 1960s to Nathan Fay's Cabernet clone. In 1975 the winery hired Randy Dunn and released its first Special Selection, made only in better years; Wine Spectator named the 1984 and 1990 Special Selections Wine of the Year. The family also makes Mer Soleil, Conundrum and Belle Glos.
