About Chateau d'Yquem

Yquem, in Sauternes, came to Jacques de Sauvage in 1593 through a land exchange with the Crown, and Léon de Sauvage d'Yquem held it outright by 1711. A 1785 marriage brought it to the Lur-Saluces family, who kept control for over two centuries; Thomas Jefferson praised it and ordered the 1784. In 1855 it was the only wine ranked Premier Cru Supérieur, reflecting its rare susceptibility to noble rot. Comte Alexandre de Lur-Saluces ran it from 1968 and fought LVMH's 1996 purchase of a majority in court, but rulings in 1998 let the deal stand; Pierre Lurton succeeded him in 2004. A dry white, Ygrec, has been made since 1959.
