About Chateau Rieussec

Rieussec is a Sauternes estate in the commune of Fargues, whose 93 hectares border Château d'Yquem. In the 18th century it belonged to the Carmelite monks of Langon. It was sold off after the Revolution and was ranked a First Growth in the 1855 classification. A long run of owners followed. Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Lafite, bought it in 1984. They built a new cellar in 1989 and made a stricter selection, and they declined to release a grand vin in 1993. The vines are mostly Sémillon. Alongside the sweet wine, the estate makes a second wine, Carmes de Rieussec, and a dry white, « R ».
