About Heitz Cellar

Heitz Cellar was founded in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz on a small Grignolino vineyard south of St. Helena. Joe, a UC Davis graduate, had worked at Gallo and under André Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu. In 1964 the couple bought an 1898 stone winery on a 160-acre ranch. Their breakthrough came with fruit from Tom and Martha May's Martha's Vineyard in Oakville, bottled separately from 1966, and Heitz is seen as the first US champion of single-vineyard labels. Its 1970 bottling placed ninth among the reds at the 1976 Paris tasting. David Heitz succeeded his father, and Gaylon Lawrence Jr. bought the estate in 2018.
