About Opus One

Opus One grew out of a 1970 meeting in Hawaii between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Mouton Rothschild, who set out to make a single Bordeaux-style blend from Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. The first vintage, 1979, came from Mondavi's To Kalon vineyard in Oakville; the partnership was announced in 1980, when Mondavi sold the venture 35 acres of that vineyard, and the 1979 and 1980 were released together in 1984. The wine was called Napamedoc until it was named Opus One in 1982. A limestone winery opposite Robert Mondavi Winery was built between 1989 and 1991. A second wine, Overture, has been made since 1993.
