Chateau La Conseillante

Chateau La Conseillante is among the most elegant and sought-after estates in Pomerol, situated on a key plateau parcel directly bordering Petrus to the north and Cheval Blanc to the west. The Nicolas family has owned the estate since 1871, farming approximately 12 hectares of clay-rich soils planted predominantly to Merlot with a component of Cabernet Franc. The wine's hallmark is silky texture and aromatic precision rare among Pomerol's denser, more opulent examples. At auction, 1,127 lots average $273 per bottle with prices reaching $5,079. The 2000 vintage is the most sought-after in the database, achieving near-perfect critical scores with auction prices regularly exceeding $500 per bottle. Other benchmark vintages include 1989, 1998, 2001, 2005, 2010, and 2015. The estate introduced a second wine, Duo de Conseillante, from 2011, allowing stricter selection for the grand vin. La Conseillante has no official classification but is universally regarded alongside Lafleur, L'Eglise-Clinet, and Vieux Chateau Certan as Pomerol's second tier behind Petrus—a position consistently validated by secondary market pricing.

Chateau La Conseillante borders both Petrus and Cheval Blanc, sharing the deep iron-rich blue clay soils of Pomerol's central plateau—one of the most favorably positioned estates in the appellation.
The 2000 vintage achieved 98+ points from Robert Parker and has traded above $400–500 per bottle in standard format, the benchmark result for the estate in any recent secondary market survey.
The Nicolas family has owned La Conseillante continuously since 1871—predating most modern Bordeaux classifications and making it one of Pomerol's longest-tenured uninterrupted family estates.
The estate farms roughly 12 hectares planted to approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc; since 2011 the second wine Duo de Conseillante absorbs declassified lots, tightening grand vin selection.

In the Glass

La Conseillante's signature is silky, aromatic Merlot with Cabernet Franc lift: fresh violets, black cherry, and plum with delicate iron and mineral notes from the clay soils. Less opulent than Petrus or Le Pin, the wine shows finer tannins and more translucent texture. With 10–20 years of age, great vintages develop truffle, leather, and dried rose complexity while retaining freshness.
