Domaine Sylvain Cathiard in Vosne-Romanee is one of Burgundy's most celebrated small domaines, farming just over 5 hectares that include premier cru parcels in Vosne and Nuits-Saint-Georges alongside a precious sliver of Romanee-Saint-Vivant grand cru. Sylvain Cathiard built the domaine's reputation through meticulous viticulture and non-interventionist winemaking in the 1990s and 2000s, achieving consistently high critical scores before his son Sebastien took primary winemaking responsibility. The Aux Malconsorts premier cru—Vosne's most powerful premier cru, adjacent to La Tache—and the Romanee-Saint-Vivant grand cru are the estate's most prized lots. At auction, 782 lots average $934 per bottle with a ceiling of $5,577—the second-highest average per bottle of any Burgundy domaine in this batch after Mugnier. The 2005 vintage tops the auction database. The Les Suchots premier cru and Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Murgers provide additional high-scoring lots. Total production across all wines is approximately 2,500–3,000 cases, with individual cru bottlings often under 300 cases—scarcity that sustains extraordinary secondary market premiums. Sebastien Cathiard has maintained the same philosophy of low yields, long maceration, and minimal intervention as his father, and recent vintages (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) have continued achieving 97–100 point scores without any quality loss through the generational transition.
