Fratelli Alessandria

Fratelli Alessandria is a traditional Barolo estate based in Verduno, a small commune at the northern end of the Barolo DOCG that remains less commercially known than Barolo, La Morra, or Castiglione Falletto despite producing some of the appellation's most compelling single-vineyard wines. The estate has been family-owned since 1870, operated through multiple generations with current direction by Vittore and Gian Battista Alessandria. The primary auction wines are three Barolo MGA (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva) cuvées: Monvigliero ($87 average), Gramolere ($75), and the standard Barolo ($108 for older vintages). The estate's Monvigliero MGA is one of Barolo's most celebrated single-vineyard sites — an east-facing, calcareous marl slope in Verduno that produces Nebbiolo of exceptional finesse and aromatic complexity. The 1964 vintage of the standard Barolo appears as the oldest and most valuable auction lot, consistent with the auction value of mid-20th century Barolo from well-preserved estates. At 101 lots averaging $81, Fratelli Alessandria trades as excellent value for single-vineyard Barolo; comparable Monvigliero from Burlotto commands significantly higher prices.

Fratelli Alessandria's Barolo Monvigliero comes from one of the DOCG's most praised MGA sites in Verduno — east-facing calcareous marl producing Nebbiolo of exceptional aromatic finesse, often compared in style to La Morra at its most elegant.
The estate has been family-owned since 1870, making it one of the older continuously operating estates in the Barolo DOCG and one of the few traditional producers maintaining all three flagship MGAs simultaneously.
The 1964 vintage of the standard Barolo appears in the auction record — a legendary year in Piedmont and one of the benchmark vintages for demonstrating Nebbiolo's potential for multi-decade aging.
At $87 average for Monvigliero at auction, Fratelli Alessandria offers the prestige Verduno MGA at prices well below Burlotto's Monvigliero, which regularly commands $150–$250 per bottle.

In the Glass

Verduno-based Barolo with the commune's distinctive aromatic delicacy: Monvigliero shows dried rose, tar, spice, and red cherry with silky, fine-grained tannins and extraordinary perfume. Gramolere, from a different MGA in Monforte, is fuller and more structured. The traditional production style — large Slavonian oak aging, long maceration — preserves the aromatic purity of Nebbiolo. All wines reward 10–20+ years of cellaring for full tannin integration.
