Giacomo Borgogno & Figli

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli is one of Barolo's most historic estates, founded in 1761 and continuously operating ever since — making it one of Italy's oldest wine producers. Based in Barolo village itself, the estate owns prestigious parcels in Cannubi, Liste, and Fossati crus, and maintains one of the most remarkable cellars of old-vintage Barolo in Italy, with a library of wines going back over a century. The traditional winemaking approach — long maceration, large Slavonian oak botti, extended aging — produces Barolo wines of considerable longevity and classical character. The estate was acquired by the Farinetti family (of Eataly fame) in 2008, who have modernised the winery while preserving the traditional style and the extraordinary cellar library. Releases of old library wines — from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s — are regularly made available and appear at auction. At auction, Borgogno represents one of the most historically important Italian wine estates, with old-vintage bottles offering a direct connection to Barolo's past and commanding significant premiums for their rarity and historical significance.

In the Glass

Borgogno Barolo is classically structured: dried cherry, tar, roses, tobacco, and earthy mineral depth, with the firm tannins and austere character of traditional Barolo. The estate's exceptional cellar library means even very old vintages appear in remarkably good condition, showing the extraordinary aging potential of the wines.
