Meursault Les Charmes Premier Cru

Meursault · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Les Charmes is the largest Premier Cru in Meursault at approximately 31 hectares, lying on the north-facing and east-facing slopes above the village centre. It is divided into two parts — Charmes Dessus (upper) and Charmes Dessous (lower) — with Dessus occupying the more limestone-rich upper slope, and Dessous the deeper, more clay-rich soils lower on the hillside. Les Charmes embodies the classic Meursault character more completely than any other Premier Cru: generous, hazelnut-and-cream richness, ample texture, and warm spice rather than the stony austerity of Les Perrières or the power of Les Genevrières. Its size means more producers bottle under the label, giving it broader availability and relative approachability in price compared to Perrières. Comtes Lafon and Guy Roulot produce the benchmark expressions; Michel Michelot and Pierre Matrot offer more affordable access.

01

At approximately 31 hectares, Les Charmes is the largest Premier Cru in Meursault — more than double the size of Les Perrières — resulting in a wider range of producer quality and more availability at auction.

02

The two sub-parcels — Charmes Dessus and Charmes Dessous — are legally permitted to be blended under the single Les Charmes Premier Cru label, though some producers bottle them separately for their top cuvées.

03

Comtes Lafon's Les Charmes bottling is one of the most reliable and consistent expressions in their range, demonstrating the classic Meursault house style of generous texture and warm hazelnut spice.

04

Les Charmes Premier Cru represents one of the best price-per-quality entry points into Meursault Premier Cru, offering the classic village character at roughly half the price of Les Perrières from comparable producers.

Meursault Les Charmes is the most classically Meursault-styled of the village's Premier Crus: generous, round, and immediately appealing, with hazelnut, toasted almond, ripe pear, and warm beurre noisette. Less mineral tension than Les Perrières, less power than Les Genevrières, but with its own distinct warmth and approachability. Village-level and Dessous parcels can be enjoyed from 5 years; the finest examples from Lafon and Roulot develop beautifully over 12–15 years, adding truffle, spice, and exotic complexity.
